Microsoft asks U.S. government for freedom to disclose security requests

SEATTLE (Reuters) - Microsoft Corp said on Tuesday it has written to the U.S. Attorney General to ask for more freedom to disclose how it handles requests from national security organizations for customer data.

The appeal comes a week after the Guardian newspaper reported that Microsoft allowed U.S. security agencies to circumvent encryption of Outlook emails and capture Skype online chats, citing leaked documents provided by Edward Snowden.

The world's largest software company said there were "significant inaccuracies" in media reports last week and asserted it does not allow any government direct or unfettered access to customers' emails, instant messages or data.

Louis C.K. Animation Imagines God Lashing Out At Global Warming Deniers (VIDEO)

Animator John Roney animated this segment from "Louis C.K. Live at the Beacon Theatre," in which he imagines that God would be totally disgusted by how humans have treated the environment. Some NSFW language, which is as funny coming from a deity as it is from Louis C.K.

Smart Advice For An Effective Internet Marketing Plan

Internet promotion can be an invaluable tool to help your business grow. While there might have a lot of useful information about online marketing online, sifting through all of it to find what works best might be a bit confusing. This article contains some succinct tips for use with Web marketing.

When trying to get people to advertise your site or have them link to it, make it simple for them to do so by including a link to us button. Anyone who likes your site will be more than happy to provide a link back to your site, just as long as you provide a link to their site, too.

It is important for you to have a mailing list. Include a place on your website for visitors to request information. Use these emails and the ones you acquire during purchases to compile your mailing list. This address can be then used for either sales letters, promotions or seeking feedback on their recent purchasing experience.

To increase your income, you must generate more subscribers. Split testing is an effective way to determine best methods since it offers different web pages to different groups. If one strategy is significantly more effective, then adopt the winner as your standard marketing strategy.

Affiliate marketing needs to be taken seriously and researched well. Get inspiration from the people that have succeeded before you. Professionals involved in internet marketing may agree to mentor you for a fee. You should also choose a marketing strategy that appeals to you; one that you can hold onto easily. Keep in mind that this might take time to start, but know that it is well worth your time.

Do not give up when you run into frustrations with internet marketing. If you stop, all of your effort will have been for nothing. When you are planning a product or service launch, you must make sure you have done all your research. This can be very difficult. That said, this work is what will make you successful in the end.

If you put the time and effort into a proper web marketing campaign, it can be an efficient and inexpensive way to promote your business. If you make these tips a part of your internet promotion strategy and synthesize them with other advice on the net, you will be poised to unleash a beast of an online marketing campaign.

Putin: Snowden a dubious present

MOSCOW (AP) ? Russian President Vladimir Putin is characterizing National Security Agency leaker Edward Snowden's long stay at a Moscow airport as an unwelcome present foisted on Russia by the United States.

In comments reported by Russian news agencies on Monday, Putin noted that Snowden flew to Moscow on June 23 "without invitation," intending only to transit to another country.

But Putin says the United States intimidated other countries against accepting Snowden, effectively blocking him from flying further.

He is quoted as saying, "Such a present to us. Merry Christmas."

Snowden said last week he would apply for Russian asylum. The status of that application is unclear.

Russian news agencies said Monday no formal application had been received. The Federal Migration Service told The Associated Press it had no information on the matter.

Sony Have Spoken: Here are the 20 Things You HAVE to Know About PlayStation 4 (VIDEO)

It also has a faster 0-60 than our first car.

Well, you don?t HAVE to. Sony haven?t hired a crack team of ex-cons to roam the nations of the world, breaking the shin bones of anyone whose knowledge of their upcoming gaming wonderbox isn?t up to scratch. (Although a company executive recently declared that they would have done, if it weren?t for ?those treehugging bastards and their aversion to innovative and aggressive business strategies.? Except he didn?t.) But you probably should, because the console seems to have had a few more fancy doohickeys and thingamabobs glued onto/poked into its shiny chassis since we last saw it at E3.

Yesterday, destructoid brought us the above clip from PlayStation Access, illustrating a couple of
the next-generation console?s more intriguing capabilities. PlayStation Dynamic Menu? Suspend mode? A middle finger to region-locking? Behold all of these --and 17 more-- above.

That touchpad on the controller is also an ACTUAL PRESS-ABLE BUTTON WE CAN PRESS? What a time to be alive.

JOHANNESBURG (AP) ? A former president of South Africa says he expects Nelson Mandela to soon be discharged from the hospital to recuperate at home.

South Africa's radio broadcaster Eyewitness News reported on Sunday that Thabo Mbeki was speaking at a memorial service Saturday when he predicted that Mandela would be going home.

Mandela has been hospitalized for more than five weeks for a recurring lung infection, sparking an outpouring of support in South Africa and internationally. Friends who have visited him say he is on life support in the form of mechanical ventilation. The most recent official update on his health said Mandela was in critical but stable condition.

The anti-apartheid hero spent 27 years in prison before becoming South Africa's first black president in 1994. He turns 95 on Thursday.
