Charlotte breast cancer survivor: "I cried once I got through it - WBTV ...

CHARLOTTE, NC (WBTV) -

Editor's Note: This is the first?in a six part series where we introduce you to Charlotte?breast cancer survivors as we count down to the annual Komen Race For The Cure on Oct. 6th.

For the next week, WBTV is going to bring you stories of women in our community fighting back against breast cancer.?

Wednesday night, we're introducing you to Venessa Beatty.

The 54-year-old diagnosed with Stage II breast cancer after she found her own 3-centimeter lump.?

"I was laying in bed," she told Anchor Molly Grantham.? "And I said, ?Okay, God.? If I'm going to have to go through this, then please help me get through this.'"

A lumpectomy, chemo and 36 rounds of radiation later, Venessa is a survivor.? She has been for over a year.

"I didn't cry till I got finished with it all," she told Anchor Molly Grantham.? "Once I got through it then I cried.? Then I became thankful and I became?I don't know.? That's when I really started appreciating the moment.? I just returned from the beach this week.? I was sitting there on the beach, with the sun coming up at 7:00 in the morning and I realized, there's so much more to life than this little cancer slice I've been living.? Life is so much bigger."

This October 6th will be Venessa's second Charlotte Susan G. Komen "Race for the Cure".? She signed up to be on a WBTV Boob Tube Team.? She has her family and friends and support group registering with her.?

"Susan Komen lets you know it's positive," she says.? "It's all about the celebration.? Celebrating life and celebrating the fact you are a survivor.? All these people came out to support all of us survivors last year.? It wasn't just us survivors holding balloons, it was family and friends and sponsors and everybody coming together for the fight.? It's a wonderful feeling."

If you want to join Venessa and be there October 6th, register now!? We invite you to be a part of WBTV's crew.? We have two teams ? morning anchor John Carter is captain of "Team John" and evening anchor Molly Grantham is captain of "Team Molly". ?It's a $30 tax-deductible donation and in return you get two t-shirts (one Komen and one WBTV).?
