NEW BRUNSWICK, N.J. ? The Barnes & Noble at Rutgers academic superstore marks its official opening today, the first of four days of events that demonstrate the type of educational, social and cultural programs the store will offer.
The three-story, 48,000-square-foot facility in The Gateway Village at College Avenue and Somerset Street provides the university and the city of New Brunswick a world-class, full-service bookstore and cultural hub adjacent to the New Jersey Transit train station.
?The new Barnes & Noble Bookstore is another successful venture?among?Rutgers University, Devco and the city of New Brunswick and demonstrates once again the virtually limitless capabilities we have when we work together,? said New Brunswick Mayor James Cahill.? ?As part of The Gateway Village, the bookstore will be a center for learning and discussion, a place for all to gather, student and nonstudent alike, in addition to being an integral part of our economic future.? Barnes & Noble College has more than 20 academic superstores nationwide, including stores at the University of Pennsylvania, Yale and Boston University. The new superstore at Rutgers is one of the 10 largest in the country offering the Rutgers community more than 60,000 new and used textbooks and e-books, as well as more than 55,000 general interest and trade books.

The store features a large Scarlet Knights shop selling Rutgers merchandise; a technology section with Nook readers, tablets, laptops and accessories; a large children?s section with books and educational games; a ?campus living room? area for readings, book-signings, musical performances and local cultural events; and the Barnes & Noble Caf? serving Starbucks beverages and food items.

To start the grand opening celebration on Sept. 6, Ted Allen, star of the Food Network show Chopped, will greet guests and sign copies of his new cookbook. Later that afternoon, the store will host an open house for Rutgers faculty and staff. A New Brunswick community open house is scheduled Sept. 8 and a student game night is set for Sept. 9. The store features a Rutgers Information Kiosk at the main entrance on Somerset Street. The kiosk will help visitors navigate the Rutgers campuses in New Brunswick and Piscataway. A touch-screen interface makes it easy to find information, and visitors can load custom directions to their mobile devices.
The store also has a New Jersey Transit DepartureVision screen that allows patrons to keep track of the train schedule at the New Brunswick station. In addition, the station is directly connected to The Gateway Village by a ramp that runs alongside the bookstore to Somerset Street.
The Gateway Village is also the new home of the Rutgers University Press. Bookstore and Rutgers University Press staff will be able to partner on author readings and related events. The store will feature books by Rutgers authors and faculty.
