The Home Depot Celebration of Service Blog Network

Today, The Home Depot store associates and The Home Depot Foundation are embarking on a two-month community outreach initiative to transform the homes and lives of veterans across the country.

I am so, so honored that I was asked to participate in this project. What could be better than teaming up with my favorite home improvement store to better the lives of others? I am at our local Home Depot so frequently that many of the employees ask me what I?m working on. Yet I had no idea the The Home Depot Foundation even existed. Shame on me! Did you know that since it?s formation in?2002, The Home Depot Foundation has granted more than $300 million to nonprofit organizations improving homes and lives in local communities? That?s definitely the kind of company I like to give my business to. Last year, they focused efforts on ensuring that every veteran has a safe home- whether it meant installing a 60 ft wheelchair ramp in a disabled Air Force veteran?s Atlanta, GA home?

?or making repairs to the facility that houses Stiggy?s Dogs in Howell, MI- a rescue organization that trains service dogs for veterans.

How amazing is that? During the 2011 campaign, 8,870 volunteers completed 320 service projects (read more about the 2011 impact here). The 2012 campaign begins today, September 6! From now until Veterans Day in November, store associate volunteers will complete hundreds of service projects ? from making mobility modifications to the homes of injured veterans to renovating shelters for homeless veterans.?Volunteer projects also will include energy efficient upgrades to homes of individual veterans and facilities that serve them to help reduce utility bills.

Over the next four months, I will be partnering with The Home Depot as a part of The Home Depot Celebration of Service Blog Network! As part of this network, I will be talking about the challenges veterans face in our communities, participating in local service projects and events and exploring the steps that we can all take to reduce our home operating costs.

I am so excited to be a part of this nationwide initiative. Stay tuned for more posts about this 2 month campaign and related projects. If you?re unfamiliar with the work of The Home Depot Foundation, you can get more information on their website, Facebook page, or follow them on Twitter!
